Why should I consider the RAC?

The RAC offers single trip (up to 90 days), annual multi-trip and family travel insurance policies in three levels of cover: Orange, Silver and Black.

All RAC travel insurance policies include Covid-19 cover as standard, including cancellation cover if you have a Covid-19 diagnosis within 14 days of departure. Emergency medical treatment and repatriation expenses are also covered if you contract the virus while you are abroad.

Enhanced Covid-19 cover can also be added to policies for an additional cost of £11 for single trip insurance and £15 for annual policies. This provides cover if you visit anywhere in Europe even if the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel due to Covid-19.

Enhanced cover protects you against cancellation due to:

Customers who have RAC breakdown cover or RAC car insurance can save 10% on single, multi-trip and family travel insurance policies with the RAC.

Policyholders can call a 24/7 emergency medical assistance helpline.

Finally, the RAC’s Black and Silver policies are rated five-stars by Defaqto.

How to find the best cover for you

Getting affordable travel insurance is important, but there are a number of other factors you’ll need to consider to make sure you get the best protection. Choosing a policy simply because it’s cheap could put you at risk of being underinsured.

According to our travel insurance partner CYTI, the majority (85%) of travel insurance claims are for overseas medical treatment and cancellation of trips. The remaining portion is made up of claims for lost baggage and possessions, as well as travel disruption and delayed departures.

When comparing policies, always check the level of cover carefully so that you know how much cover is included for these most common claims. Avoid choosing a policy by price alone.

As Covid-19 continues to affect international travel, it’s also important to check how your policy handles Covid-related risks. Take a look at our Best Covid-19 Travel Insurance Policies page for more information.

Why it makes sense to compare policies and providers

Travel insurance is a competitive market, with insurers doing their best to outbid each other and win your business. This can be used to your advantage by shopping around for the best deal and not automatically renewing if your annual multi-trip cover is coming to an end.

When looking for the best policy, it’s also worth looking for reviews on sites such as TrustPilot to see how existing policyholders rate their cover and customer service.

Defaqto also gives star ratings to travel insurance providers which can be a good indication of the service offered.
